Joint Traffic Taskforce - Industry Engagement Day with Boral Australia

Updated: Jan 15, 2021

Joint Traffic Taskforce Officers from the Traffic & Highway Patrol Command, along with Roads & Maritime Managers attended an 'Industry Engagement Day' hosted by Boral Australia, at their Prestons Facility on Tuesday 7 February.

During the day Police & RMS officers were taken through Boral's compliance systems in respect of training and induction of drivers, telematics, heavy vehicle maintenance, sub contractor management, and records management. Boral staff also provided a number of their heavy vehicles, and trailers, for Police & RMS Officers to inspect, where Boral Driver Trainers provided advice on driver and vehicle safety features.

Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy of the state's Traffic & Highway Patrol Command said 'Industry Engagement' is an essential feature of the Joint Traffic Taskforce's operational program.

"Whilst our main focus is heavy vehicle safety enforcement, our engagement with industry is essential for the benefit of joint learning, and being exposed to what operators are doing to ensure the safety of their own fleets, and drivers."

"With Police & RMS conducting operations and attending heavy vehicle incidents, it is failures in maintenance, and compliance that lead to serious injury and fatal crashes, and subsequent congestion on key roads. Industry need to know what it is that officers see on our roads, just as it is important for Police & the RMS to be exposed to what Boral and others are doing in terms of industry compliance, particularly in terms of how their sub contractors are managed."

"The main aim of our enforcement and engagement activities is the prosecution of those operators and drivers not up to standard, for the benefit of preventing heavy vehicle serious injury and fatal crashes on our roads."

"It is pleasing to see the commitment to compliance and safety that Boral has in support of road safety."

Paul Endycott, GM Compliance Operations for RMS said in light of recent critical heavy vehicle events and safety issues identified, the Industry Engagement today at the Boral company facility was extremely pleasing.

“Senior company officers opened their doors to show Senior Police and Senior Managers from RMS their heavy vehicle compliance management systems,” Mr Endycott said. “It was obvious the company takes its compliance and safety obligations relating fatigue, speed and all operations very seriously.

“We are very pleased to be able to engage and support such organisations to share our experience to help these safety leaders and, equally, to witness class leading heavy vehicle and driver management.

“The innovation has many benefits including increased productivity but, most importantly, improved safety for all on our roads.”

Victoria Sherwood, General Manager of Supply Chain for Boral Australia said it was an absolute pleasure to have so many professionals visit our operation and share their insights and experiences around safety and compliance.

“Boral's commitment to compliance and safety is significant, given the important task we have in supporting various infrastructure, commercial and residential construction projects throughout NSW and Australia. We are always looking for ways to continue to improve our performance in support of our Zero Harm company culture. We believe we have established high standards of safety and compliance in relation to our dedicated logistics operations and our focus is continuing to improve the performance of our subcontractors. This is an area we hope to continue to work closely both with the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command and the Roads and Maritime Service Managers.”
